Vice President for Research and Innovation, University College Cork, Ireland

Professor Anita Maguire commenced as Vice President for Research and Innovation in UCC in January 2011.Over the past twenty years at UCC she has led an active research team focusing on synthetic organic and pharmaceutical chemistry, which interacts extensively with the pharmaceutical sector in Ireland and internationally. She is Director of the interdisciplinary research centre, the Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility and has served as Head of the Department of Chemistry (2005-7) and Head of the School of Pharmacy (since 2009). She was elected to the Governing Body of University College Cork in December 2003. She is actively engaged nationally in strategic policy development in relation to research, STI policy, the academic industry interface and strategic development of the pharmaceutical industry. Recently appointed as Chair of the IRCSET Council, Prof. Maguire also holds/has held positions on a number of state boards, including NUI Senate, IUA nominee to the Steering Committee, Expert Group For Skills Needs study Future Skills Requirements of the Pharmaceutical and Biopharmaceutical sector, NIBRT, the Advisory Science Council - membership includes currently leading the FP8 National Consultation Process in partnership with DETI & Forfas. She also chaired the ACSTI and former ICSTI Task Forces on: The Roles of PhD’s in the Smart Economy; The Strategy for Science, Technology & Innovation; and Embedding the Pharmachem Sector in Ireland as well as being a member of the ASC taskforce on Towards a Framework for Researcher Careers.At EU level, she is Adjunct Professor in Chemistry, University of Bergen, Norway and has served on many review boards, including the Research Council of Norway.  She was Chair of the EU COST Management Committee for Action D12 concerning 'Organic Transformations: Selective Processes and Asymmetric Catalysis'.
