Prof. Rolf-Dieter Heuer

avatar for Prof. Rolf-Dieter Heuer

Rolf-Dieter Heuer is the director general of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Most of his scientific work as a particle physicist has focused on the study of electron-positron reactions, the development of experimental techniques, and the construction and operation of large detector systems. From 2004 to 2008, Heuer was research director for particle and astroparticle physics at the DESY laboratory, a member of the Helmholtz Association. In 1998, Heuer was appointed to a chair at the University of Hamburg, where he set up a working group to prepare experiments at an electron-positron linear collider that quickly became one of the leading groups in this field worldwide. From 1984 to 1998, Heuer was a staff member at CERN, working for the OPAL experiment at the electron-positron storage ring LEP and serving as the collaboration’s spokesperson from 1994 to1998.
