Professor O’Shea is VP for Research and Prof of Electrical & Computer Engineering at UMD. Previously, he served as Chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Executive Director of the Center for Applied Electromagnetics, Co-Director of the Maryland Cyber Security Center, Director of the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics at the UMD; Project Leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and on the faculty of Duke University. Born in Cork, he holds a B.Sc. in Physics from UCC, and M.S. and Ph.D. from the UMD. His expertise includes applied electromagnetics, particle accelerators for applications in medicine, nanoscience, high energy physics and energy. At Los Alamos he worked on two projects: the Beam Expedient Aboard Rocket, as Chief Beam Physicist, and the APEX Free-Electron Laser Project, as Project Leader. He has published over 200 scientific articles.  He is often invited to participate in interviews and lectures on many technical subjects.
